Secret's Out

Cologne's G2 Gerling-Preis is often the re-entry point for Germany's leading older horses and Sunday's edition is no exception with Horst Pudwill's G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and G2 Prix Foy hero Dschingis Secret (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) back under the domestic spotlight. Proving the latter defeat of Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Talismanic (GB) (Medaglia d'Oro) was no fluke when sixth in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October, the bay may have been feeling the effects of his Chantilly efforts when signing off with a third in Munich's G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern a month later. Gestut Rottgen's G1 Deutsches Derby hero Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}) could have a big year ahead of him as he reappears for the first time since stamping his authority on the G1 Preis von Europa over this course and distance in September. Both could be vulnerable under penalties up against Gestut Winterhauch's progressive Veneto (Ger) (New Approach {Ire}), who took the 10 1/2-furlong course warm-up, the Apr. 2 Listed Grand Prix-Aufgalopp.
