Saturday's Kentucky Derby Update

Gormley | Benoit

• The lightly raced GII Wood Memorial S. third-place finisher and GIII Gotham S. runner-up Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music) has been removed from GI Kentucky Derby consideration and will be pointed to the GI Preakness S., according to trainer Chad Brown. The defection of Cloud Computing bumps GIII Rebel S. third-place finisher and 'TDN Rising Star' Untrapped (Trappe Shot) into the field for the first Saturday in May. Owned by Michael Langford, the Steve Asmussen-trained runner was last seen finishing sixth in the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 15.

Gormley (Malibu Moon), a last out winner of the GI Santa Anita Derby, worked six furlongs in 1:15.80 (14/15) in Arcadia Saturday. Gormley posted fractional times of :26, :38.60, :52.40 and 1:04. “He went well,” trainer John Shirreffs said. Gormley is scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs May 1.

'TDN Rising Star' Battle of Midway (Smart Strike), a game second after setting a hot pace in the Santa Anita Derby, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Santa Anita Saturday. “Battle of Midway started behind his workmate [Spanish Eyes], had a good target, ran past him and galloped out well,” Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “He's totally on schedule. He'll have one more work here next week and then ship [to Kentucky] on the 29th. Flavien Prat will ride Battle of Midway in the Derby.”

Reach the World (Tapit–Reach the Stars {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), a promising fourth after a wide trip in the GI Santa Anita Derby, suffered a fatal leg injury while working out at Santa Anita Saturday and was later euthanized, according to published reports. The Don Alberto homebred, trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, was previously a strong second to the Derby-bound Battle of Midway in an optional claimer at Santa Anita Mar. 9.
