SALTY (f, 4, Quality Road&log=">Quality Road–Theycallmeladyluck, by Dixie Union), making her first appearance since an even seventh in last year's GI Cotillion S., tumbled throughout the wagering to be off as the 1-2 chalk and made no mistakes, pulling clear in the final sixteenth of a mile to win as much the best. Off perhaps a half-step slowly, the bay raced last but one and a bit off the inside before being asked to improve nearing the three-eighths pole. Finding her best stride from there, Salty was four wide off the home corner and swept into the lead inside the final eighth of a mile, then was ridden out to a convincing two-length defeat of Victory Rally (Jump Start). Winner of last year's GII Gulfstream Park Oaks in her second start after being bought into by Gary Barber, Salty was a deceptively good fifth to champion Abel Tasman (Quality Road) in the GI Kentucky Oaks and was a wide-trip second to that rival to complete a Quality Road 1-2 in the GI Acorn S. She was also third in the GI CCA Oaks and in the GI Alabama S. before calling it a season following the Cotillion. “She keeps getting stronger and stronger the further she goes,” winning jockey Tyler Gaffalione said. “She's a really nice filly and she's really come back strong this year.” Salty, whose second dam is GSW Vegas Prospector (Crafty Prospector), is a half-sister to a 2-year-old Candy Ride (Arg) colt and a yearling filly by American Pharoah.
