Rymska Gives Brown Sixth Straight Sweetest Chant

Rymska | Leslie Martin

Rymska had it all to do while still far back and just two furlongs to race in Saturday's GIII Sweetest Gal S. at Gulfstream Park, but she uncoiled a wicked turn of foot in the final eighth of a mile and flashed home to give trainer Chad Brown a sixth consecutive victory in the race.

Allowed to settle in the latter third of the field, Rymska raced three wide with cover around the clubhouse turn as Okinawa (The Factor) tugged her way along just in advance of the prompting A Great Time (Street Magician). Nicely switched off through the middle stages for Joel Rosario, the registered back filly was ridden cold on the second turn while full of run and was pulled out wide into the stretch to launch her bid. Out of the frame as the front-runners raced into the final furlong, Rymska came rolling down the center of the track and was along in the waning strides to best Compelled, who sat a ground-saving trip behind the speed, but was no match for the winner. Fifty Five followed the move of the eventual winner around the turn and matched Rymka's final quarter-mile in :22.94 to narrowly miss second.

“She's been putting on weight, training well, fresh,” Brown commented. “I thought a mile might be a touch short, and she showed her class to get up in time. I was [concerned]. [Joel Rosario] tried to tuck her in the first turn and somebody took his spot and she was not only far back off a slow pace but she was three wide. It wasn't his fault. I could see what his intentions were but Joel's a top-class rider. He went to Plan B. He knew he was sitting on a ton of horse and he just bided his time, and she won despite all that.”

Trained in France by Pia Brandt, Rymska was a debut third behind future Group 3 winner Toulifaut (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), then won her next two, including a defeat of males in a listed event at Craon Sept. 2. The registered black filly found herself close to a sedate tempo in the GIII Miss Grillo S. over yielding Belmont turf Oct. 2, ultimately finishing second to stablemate New Money Honey (Medaglia d'Oro), and found the line well last time, checking in fifth to the latter in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 4.

Pedigree Notes:
An €35,000 purchase as a weanling by Michel Zerolo's Oceanic Bloodstock out of the 2014 Arqana Breeding Stock sale, Rymska is the seventh graded/group winner for her G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning sire, who has also accounted for G1 Prix de Diane winners Avenir Certain (Fr) and La Cressionniere (Fr) from his first few crops to race. Hailing from the extended female family of G1SW Creator (GB) (Mill Reef), Rymska is kin to the 2-year-old colt L'Or de Trezy (Fr) (Lord du Sud {Fr}) and the yearling filly Belle de Trezy (Fr) (American Post {GB}).
