Galileo's Capri Extends O'Brien's Beresford Record

Capri | Racing Post

With four engaged, it was long odds-on that Aidan O'Brien would be collecting a 16th renewal of this traditional Derby pointer, especially after the chief opposition Firey Speech (Street Cry {Ire}) was withdrawn by Dermot Weld and so it proved. Ryan Moore faced a tough choice, with each one of the quartet having shown quality in their brief careers so far and he correctly opted for the proven one, as Capri had already scored in black-type company in the Aug. 5. Listed Coolmore Canford Cliffs S. over an extended seven furlongs at Tipperary. Previously, he had beaten the subsequent winner of a decent Gowran Park maiden, Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}), in a maiden over an extended mile at the Galway festival July 30 so he had solid claims of joining the likes of the stable's past Beresford winners Septimus (Ire), Eagle Mountain (GB) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) and St Nicholas Abbey (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

Settled in a share of third early, the grey was driven past Exemplar with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and stayed on from Yucatan, who denied Exemplar second as Ballydoyle enjoyed a one-two-three for good measure. “I'd say all three are good horses with exciting futures, as they pulled well clear,” Moore said. “They coped with that ground well and had to have a lot of ability to do that. Capri travelled smoothly and picked up very well and at the moment he's doing everything right.” O'Brien added, “I was very impressed with all three colts. They went a nice pace and came up the middle, so they had to learn. Capri is a nice-moving horse and should prefer better ground. All three should definitely get a mile and a quarter and if they are good over that, they should get a mile and a half. They are all bred for it. Ryan was very happy. He kept quickening and was surprised they came with him. Next week could be a bit quick for them to run again, but we certainly will look at the [G1] Racing Post Trophy [at Doncaster Oct. 22] for all three. You learn the same as we do when we run them against each other. Sometimes we get surprised and sometimes not.”

Dialafara, who has already produced the useful son of Galileo, Jamaica (Ire), is a daughter of the G2 Prix de Malleret and G3 Prix de la Nonette winner and G1 Prix Vermeille second Diamilina, herself a daughter of Diamonaka who was runner-up in the Malleret. Diamonaka, a half-sister to the G2 Prix Greffulhe winner Diamond Mix (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}), is also the dam of the G3 Prix La Rochette-winning sire Diamond Green (Fr), who was also placed in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and G1 St James's Palace S. The dam also has a yearling full-brother and a foal full-sister to the winner to follow.
