'Rising Star' Tammy the Torpedo Game in Tropical Park Oaks

Tammy the Torpedo | Lauren King

TAMMY THE TORPEDO (f, 3, More Than Ready–Search and Seizure, by War Chant), named a 'TDN Rising Star' off her head-turning debut at the Spa in August of her juvenile year, earned a hard-fought first stakes success here. Third and seventh, respectively, behind superstar stablemate Lady Eli (Divine Park) in the GIII Miss Grillo S. and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Tammy the Torpedo missed the next 50 weeks of racing before returning successfully in a Belmont allowance Oct. 18. Sixth with some traffic trouble in Churchill's GII Mrs. Revere S. Nov. 14, she was backed in half of her morning line down to 3-1. Hung four wide from the second flight into the first turn, Tammy the Torpedo was never able to find cover, and made an early move to take a narrow lead from pacesetter Celestine (Scat Daddy) midway on the home bend. Celestine battled back, but Tammy the Torpedo responded willingly and got the job done by a neck in 1:43.33 with the cavalry charge not far behind. According to Trakus data, Tammy the Torpedo covered an additional 71 feet (approx. 8 1/4 lengths) than the runner-up. “She had a really challenging trip, being wide the whole way; I really wasn't happy with the trip at all,” said Brown, whose trainee broke from the No. 11 post in the field of 12 3-year-old fillies. “But somehow she still found a way to win. It was an impressive effort.” The winner's dam, who is a half to MGSW Criminologist (Maria's Mon), produced an unraced juvenile colt named Jaxy Boy (Lookin at Lucky) and a weanling colt by Lookin at Lucky. She was bred back to Verrazano.  Sales history: $100,000 yrl '13 KEESEP; $225,000 2yo '14 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 6-3-0-1. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
