'Rising Star' Proctor's Ledge Takes the Lake Placid

Proctor's Ledge | Sarah K. Andrew

“TDN Rising Star” Proctor's Ledge made an eye-catching late move to score her second consecutive graded victory at Saratoga Saturday. Away well, the homebred bided her time in a ground-saving fourth as fellow “TDN Rising Star” Coasted (Tizway) ticked off comfortable opening splits of :24.39 and :50.03 with Party Boat and La Coronel (Colonel John) close behind. MGSW La Coronel ranged up menacingly as Coasted hit the 3/8ths pole in 1:14.11, but Party Boat and Proctor's Ledge were right on her tail. Those four lined up across the track with Proctor's Ledge running widest of all and Uni continuing to trail, but Coasted soon threw in the towel leaving the other three to fight it out. While La Coronel and Party Boat remained locked together, Proctor's Ledge hit another gear and unleashed a furious late turn of foot, powering clear of her rivals and holding off a bold rally from Uni to score. Party Boat edged out La Coronel to be third and Coasted finished last of the quintet.

“She's something else, to beat fillies like that so impressively,” said trainer Brendan Walsh. “She's been threatening all the time to do this and getting better and better. It's just fantastic and great for everybody involved: super owners, my guys working with her. It's just brilliant.”

As for her next start, the conditioner said, “I don't know about the Breeders' Cup, but you have to think about a race like the [GI QEII Challenge Cup at Keeneland Oct. 14] next for her.”

Winning rider Javier Castellano was equally pleased, saying, “You could tell the pace was comfortable. She was laid back. I liked the way she finished. I love the way she runs. No matter where you put her, she'll always show up.”

A second out graduate at Gulfstream Jan. 28 at odds of 49-1, Proctor's Ledge earned her Rising Star nod when circling the field for an impressive last-to-first optional claimer victory in Hallandale Feb. 18. Third to La Coronel in Keeneland's one-mile GIII Appalachian S. Apr. 13, the bay was fourth to that rival in the GIII Edgewood S. at Churchill Downs May 5. Completing the exacta behind fellow “TDN Rising Star” Sweeping Paddy (Paddy O'Prado) in the nine-panel GIII Regret S. beneath the Twin Spires June 17, Proctor's Ledge charged home to a decisive victory in this venue's GIII Lake George S. July 21 while receiving Lasix for the first time and a new rider in Eclipse winner Castellano.

Pedigree Notes:
Proctor's Ledge was bred and is owned by Patricia Moseley, the former chairwoman of Suffolk Downs and widow of prominent Massachusetts racing figure James Moseley. James Moseley campaigned Proctor's Ledge's third dam Drumtop to a number of stakes victories and course-record-breaking performances going long on the turf, and her bred her second dam Aliata in partnership with legendary horseman Paul Mellon. Dam Archstone's best performance was a runner-up finish in Belmont's Sabin S. over 10 turfy panels for Patricia Moseley in 2008. Archstone produced a Street Sense filly in 2016 and was bred back to Orb, but failed to get in foal. The 14-year-old mare was sent back to Ghostzapper earlier this term.
