Raging Bull Caps Cross-Country Grade I Double for Chad

Raging Bull | Benoit

Raging Bull made amends for a disappointing performance as the favorite last time in the GII Hill Prince S. Oct. 6 with his first top-level success in Del Mar's GI Hollywood Derby Saturday. The 6-5 chalk was well back off the pace in third last early as Have At It (Kitten's Joy) showed the way through an opening quarter in :23.70 and a half in :48.20. Taking closer order as three quarters went up in 1:12.48, the bay unleashed a powerful three-wide rally turning for home and ran down River Boyne (Ire) in the final strides to score. It was a Grade I double for winning trainer Chad Brown, who stayed in New York to saddle GI Cigar Mile hero Patternrecognition (Adios Charlie). It was the seventh North American Grade I win of the season for owner Peter Brant, who also campaigns four-time top level scorer. Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), GI Summer S. victor Fog of War (War Front) and GI Beldame S. heroine Wow Cat (Chi) (Lookin at Lucky).

A debut winner at Keeneland in April, Raging Bull followed suit with an optional claimer win at Belmont June 8 and was second to Up the Ante (Smart Strike) next out over that course in the Manila S. July 4. Producing a strong late rally to deny Maraud (Blame) by a nose in Saratoga's GII Hall of Fame S. Aug. 3, he turned the tables on Up the Ante with a 1 1/4-length score in the Spa's GIII Saranac S. Sept. 1. Hammered down to 2-5 favoritism to repeat in Belmont's nine-panel Hill Prince, French-bred colt never seriously threatened, finishing a flat fifth behind the re-opposing Have At It.

Pedigree Notes:

Raging Bull is the seventh Group/Grade I winner for his sire Dark Angel and the second in America. His SP dam Rose Bonheur, a half-sister to Italian Highweight and MGSW Rolly Polly (Ire) (Mukaddamah), is also responsible for the juvenile filly Rapture (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) and the yearling filly Siyoubaby (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}).
