Queen 'Be' Works Toward Return

Two-time champion Beholder (Henny Hughes) continues to prepare for her return to the races after six months on the sidelines. The bay breezed six furlongs under regular pilot Gary Stevens in 1:10.80 (2/21) in Arcadia Thursday.

“She's doing real well,” Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella told the TDN Friday. “She had a nice work [Thursday]. We are just trying to make a plan on where we will go next. She is just getting fit and ready to go.”

Kicking off last term with a win in Santa Anita's Santa Lucia S. last April, the Spendthrift Farm colorbearer was fourth as the chalk in the GI Ogden Phipps S. June 7.

Successfully defending her title in Arcadia's GI Zenyatta S. Sept. 27, Beholder was scratched from another expected title defense in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff after coming down with a fever. The bay's connections also decided to scratch her from the Fasig-Tipton November sale and bring her back to the races this term.
