Quality Road Colt Makes the Grade in Bay Shore

LONG HAUL BAY defeated his fellow New York-breds by a flared nostril on his Feb. 18 debut over the inner track and made the most of this first open-company test, sprinting home impressively to take Saturday's GIII Bay Shore S. by three lengths. Allowed to drift back off a three-way tussle for the early lead, the Alpha Delta homebred began to warm up to the task midway on the turn while three deep and was clearly going better than even-money Theory (Gemologist), who was being niggled along by John Velazquez. Sweeping to the front with about a furlong and a half to run, Long Haul Bay descended upon longshot leader Even Thunder  with an eighth of a mile to race and proved a much-the-best winner. You're To Blame rallied from far back to finish third. The winner's dam, winner of the 2002 GIII Florida Oaks, is a half-sister to the successful sire Lion Heart (Tale of the Cat) and was purchased by Jon Clay's Alpha Delta for $400,000 in foal to Hard Spun at the 2008 Keeneland November sale. That produce, Midnight Transfer, won the San Pedro S. and was third to Creative Cause and Bodemeister in the 2012 GII San Felipe S. French Satin is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Bluegrass Cat and was most recently bred to Fed Biz (Giant's Causeway). Long Haul Bay is the 10th graded stakes winner for Lane's End's Quality Road.
