Pletcher Starts Potent Pair Looking For Another Sanford

Todd Pletcher | Adam Coglianese

The king of 2-year-old racing at Saratoga, Todd Pletcher has scored in the GIII Sanford S. six times, and he'll go for lucky number seven with a one-two punch led by Starlight Racing's Sombeyay (Into Mischief) in Saturday's renewal.

Romping by 6 1/2 lengths on debut Apr. 27 at Gulfstream, the $230,000 Keeneland September graduate finished fast after a poor start to be a close second in the Tremont S. June 8 at Belmont. The bay drilled a bullet five furlongs in 1:01 1/5 (1/11) July 14 over the Oklahoma training track in preparation for this.

Pletcher's other runner is Calumet Farm homered Lexitonian (Speightstown). The chestnut showed professionalism and courage when sneaking through a rail opening to take his June 27 debut at Belmont.

John Oxley's Strike Silver (Violence) went wire to wire in capturing his June 14 unveiling at Churchill, clocking his final furlong of the five-panel test in under 12 seconds. The dark bay draws the advantageous outside post here.
