Paco Boy's Beat the Bank Outclasses Thoroughbred Stakes Rivals

Continuing a bonanza Glorious Goodwood meeting for Andrew Balding, Beat the Bank confirmed the form of his impressive success in Newmarket's Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. over this trip July 13. Showing instant talent for his then trainer Darren Bunyan when taking a seven-furlong maiden at Dundalk Feb. 24, the bay beat Godolphin's Salsabeel (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in a conditions event over that trip at the Craven meeting on Newmarket's Rowley Mile Apr. 18. After running 10th in the G3 Jersey S. again at seven at Royal Ascot June 21, he had come back to his previous level in the Sir Henry Cecil and only deteriorated ground conditions caused any concern as he lined up for this.

Slightly keen for Ryan Moore in fourth, he needed a gap to open in the straight but when it appeared he had an abundance of time to put his seal on the race. Taking command approaching the furlong pole, he was soon clear from Make Time and Forest Ranger whose battle was for the minor honours. With the kind of mounts he enjoys these days, Moore has the best line into the relative ability of the European horses and it is significant that he was taken by the winner. “I'd been impressed by him every time I'd seen him and he handled this ground okay,” he said. “He travelled very well and has a very good turn of foot, so I'm sure he has a big future and Andrew will know where to go with him.” Balding added, “He's a smart horse who has looked pretty special at home, but I was worried about the ground. He had a dirty scope after his only blip at Ascot, but we can forgive him that. We've got enough horses at home to know whether he's good or not and next year's Sussex is not impossible.”

Beat the Bank is out of the Listed Oh So Sharp S. third Tiana, whose listed-placed sprinter Salt Island (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) showed useful form for the Charlie Hills stable two years ago. Carrying on the Goodwood them, she is a half to the 2004 G3 Molecomb S. runner-up Mary Read (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) from the family of the G1 Middle Park S. and G2 Gimcrack S.-winning sire Stalker (GB). The dam has a yearling filly to come also by Exceed and Excel and a filly foal by Showcasing (GB).
