Overture Wire to Wire in Indiana Oaks

Overture went to the front and never looked back to notch the first graded stakes success of her young career Saturday night in Shelbyville. The Florida-bred was making her first start around two turns for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Breaking from the rail, she made the lead comfortably and coasted along through fractions of :24.68 and :49.63. Turning for home while confronted by a pair of rivals, she dug in to find more and re-broke to report home clearly in front.

“Coming into the first turn, I was on the lead pretty easily,” said jockey Julien Leparoux. “It was very comfortable. I took it and she went all the way to the wire.”

A second-out winner going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Apr. 5, the dark bay shipped north and ran second and third in a pair of Belmont allowance events May 3 and June 1, respectively. The latter effort came in the wake of Unchained Melody (Smart Strike), a next-out impressive winner of the July 1 GII Mother Goose S. in Elmont. She worked three times in the interim.

“We've always liked the filly,” said Kenny McCarthy, assistant to Mott. “Her last race was maybe a bit of a head-scratcher. But even based on that, Bill thought she fit here tonight.”

Sean Tugel, director of bloodstock for WinStar Farm added, “It's fantastic. Her running lines over her last couple of races have been very good. The filly that beat her last time out came back and one the Mother Goose last week. She's a filly we thought would really appreciate the two turns, and we got her out of New York, which was a one-turn mile and a sixteenth.”
