Omaha Beach Undergoes Successful Throat Surgery

Omaha Beach | Sarah Andrew

GI Arkansas Derby hero and initial GI Kentucky Derby favorite Omaha Beach (War Front) underwent surgery at Rood & Riddle in Kentucky Friday for an entrapped epiglottis, which caused him to scratch from the Run for the Roses, and the procedure went smoothly.

“They did the procedure to treat the epiglottis [Friday] and it was a very simple deal, so it's done,” Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella said. “He'll probably get two weeks off, something like that. He'll stay in Kentucky, then return here and go back in training. It isn't that big of a deal. The big deal is the timing.”

Omaha Beach is out of Triple Crown consideration, but will be aimed at a summer campaign with an eye on the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.
