Oaks Winners Square Off in Spinster

Untapable | Sherackatthetrack

The winners of the last two renewals of the prestigious GI Kentucky Oaks will line up in Sunday's GI Juddmonte Spinster S. at Keeneland.

Last year's champion 3-year-old filly Untapable (Tapit) looks to get back on track after three straight defeats. The 2014 Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine followed an easy win in Oaklawn's GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 10 with second-place finishes in the GI Ogden Phipps S. June 6 and GIII Shuvee H. Aug. 2 in New York. She tired to third in Saratoga's GI Personal Ensign S. last time Aug. 29. The bay has been installed as the 9-5 morning-line favorite.

It's been a struggle for Lovely Maria (Majesticperfection) in two attempts since her big win on the first Friday in May. A puzzling fifth at .30 cents on the dollar in the GIII Delaware Oaks July 11, the Brereton C. Jones colorbearer showed speed and tired to finish sixth going 10 furlongs in the GI Alabama S. at Saratoga last out Aug. 22. Lovely Maria, drawn on the fence in this one, won the GI Ashland S. over this course back in April.

The versatile Frivolous (Empire Maker) has held her form nicely since upsetting the GII Fleur de Lis H. at odds of 32-1 in Louisville June 13. Second behind subsequent GI Personal Ensign S. victress Sheer Drama (Burning Roma) in the GI Delaware H. July 18, the G. Watts Humphrey Jr. homebred switched up tactics and rallied from far back to win the Locust Grove S. by eight lengths beneath the Twin Spires last out Sept. 12.
