Notable US-Bred/Sired Runners in Japan: July 8 & 9

In this ongoing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hakodate and Chukyo Racecourses as some American-bred babies step out for their career debuts

Saturday, July 8
1st-HAK, ¥9,550,000 (US$84k), Maiden, 2yo, 1200mT
DOWNTOWN KIRARI (JPN) (f, 2, Point of Entry–Downtown Girl, by City Zip) is already the veteran of one racetrack appearance, as she rallied smartly to miss by a half-length in third in a course-and-distance test June 24 (video, gate 4). The chestnut, out of a half-sister to Japanese Group 3 winner Henny Hound (Henny Hughes), was purchased in utero for $45K at the 2014 KEENOV sale. B-Masamichi Hayashi

5th-CKO, ¥13,400,000 (US$118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT
NISHINO TRANS AM (c, 2, Orb–Glorious Success, by Successful Appeal), a $145K KEENOV weanling and $150K KEESEP yearling, has a license to take to this surface and to excel over even further, as his unraced dam is a half-sister to the globetrotting treble Group 1 winner Campanologist (Kingmambo). His third dam is Canadian Horse of the Year Glorious Song, responsible for the likes of turf luminaries Singspiel (Ire) and Rahy. B-Teneri Farm Inc & Bernardo Alvarez Calderon (KY)

6th-CKO, ¥13,400,000 (US$118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400m
The well-related ASAKUSA GENKI (c, 2, Stormy Atlantic–Amelia, by Dixieland Band) makes this career debut on the dirt–somewhat surprisingly–given the rousing success of his female family on the grass. The $210K KEESEP graduate is kin to a trio of graded-stakes winners over that surface, including Rainha da Bateria (Broken Vow), full-sister Assateague and Kindergarden Kid (Dynaformer). However, half-brother He's Had Enough (Tapit) nearly won the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, half-sister Rabbit Run (Tapit) was a 7-length winner on the dirt in this country last year and further down the page is GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Bayern (Offlee Wild) and the plethora of high-class dirt runners descending from Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee. 5th-HAK, ¥13,400,000 (US$118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
Stormy Atlantic crosses with the Courtly Dee family yet again Saturday, this time on the turf, in the form of debutante WHITE SUCCESS (–Amazon Lily, by Unbridled's Song). The gray filly is a maternal great-granddaughter of SW & GSP Aurora (Danzig), the daughter of 1982 champion 2-year-old filly Althea (Alydar), whose half-brother Twining (Forty Niner) has been a successful sire over the years in Japan. B-Patchen Wilkes Farm LLC (KY)

Sunday, July 9
11th-CKO, Procyon S.-G3, ¥68,000,000 (US$600k), 3yo/up, 1400m
BEST MACHO (c, 4, Macho Uno–Encore, by Storm Cat) snapped a mini three-race skid last time with a soft victory in a 1400m test at Tokyo June 3, defeating fellow Adena-sired A Shin Balancer (Ghostzapper) in deceptively easy style (video). It was the fifth win from nine career starts for the dark bay, a $100K FTKJUL graduate turned $260K BARMAR breezer. B-Fredericka V Caldwell & Mitchel Skolnick (KY)
