9th-TOK, Hyacinth S.-LR, ¥34,200,000 (US$301k), 3yo, 1600m
The Hyacinth S., which offers the winner 50 points on the road to the Kentucky Derby, will be previewed later this week, and FOGGY NIGHT (JPN) (Tapit–Champagne d'Oro, by Medaglia d'Oro) looks to remain perfect while making just the second start of his career. The gray is the first Japanese-bred produce for his dam, winner of the 2010 GI Acorn S. and sold with this colt in utero by Bluewater Sales for $2.7m at FTKNOV in 2013. He was subsequently purchased for ¥248.4m (US$1.87m) at the 2015 JRHA Select Yearling Sale, the joint-second top price of the sale. Champagne d'Oro's Deep Impact colt of 2015 fetched ¥253.8m (US$2.3m) at the same event last year. Matera Sky (Speightstown–Mostaqeleh, by Rahy), a $140K KEENOV weanling, grew into his frame and realized a final bid of $350K from Teruo Ono at KEESEP in 2015. He hails from the extended female family of European champion Bahri (Riverman) and Eclipse Award winner Ajina (Strawberry Road {Aus}).

4th-KYO, ¥11,400,000 (US$100k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1800m
No fewer than five American-breds–three fillies and a pair of colts–are among the 16 entered for this newcomers event, topped by LEON MATERA (Unbridled's Song–Graciously Soft, by Vindication). Foaled in New York, this close relative to 'TDN Rising Star' and SW Justin Squared (Zensational) hails from the final crop for his successful sire and cost Teruo Ono $500,000 at KEESEP in 2015. Second dam Siberian Fur (Siberian Express) produced MGSW & MGISP Unbridled's Note to the cover of Unbridled's Song as well as MGISW Spoken Fur (Notebook), who resides in Japan. Farthingale (Shackleford–Royal Affection, by Vindication) takes on the boys in her first trip to the post. Purchased in utero for $35,000 at KEEJAN in 2014, the April foal was a $125K graduate of the 2015 FTNAUG sale. Consigned to the 2016 OBSAPR 2yo in training sale, the New York-bred breezed a quarter-mile in a fleet :20 4/5 and was hammered down to Narvick International for $310K. She is one of two fillies in the race for her sire, who also supplies Last Lode (–Million Seller, by A. P. Indy) from the family of Sky Beauty, Tale of Ekati and Pleasant Home. American Forte (Distorted Humor–Lady Lochinvar, by Lord at War {Arg}) is a half-brother to MGSW Master Command (A.P. Indy) and GSW Aurora Lights (Pulpit) and was a $225K purchase at the 2015 KEESEP sale. His dam is a full-sister to GISW La Gueriere and a half to GISW Al Mamoon.
