ROYAL OBSESSION (f, 3, Tapit–Rote, by Tiznow) had to work for it, but pulled out her second victory from as many starts in dramatic fashion Saturday. The $1.15-million purchase out of the Regis Farms dispersal at last year's Keeneland November sale earned the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction on debut when she overcame a similarly tough trip to earn her diploma over 7 1/2 furlongs at Churchill Downs Nov. 29. Off at 4-5, the grey was allowed to settle in at the back of the pack behind slow early splits without any attempt to get cover. She took closer order while four deep along the home bend, and ground down her competition slowly, striking the line a head to the good of fellow well-bred second timer Lemon Drop Belle (Lemon Drop Kid). Out of a half-sister to GISW Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song), Royal Obsession is a half to a City Zip 2-year-old filly named Jumby Bay and has a yearling full-brother by Tapit.
