Classic winning rider George Baker has announced he will not be making a comeback to the saddle as he continues his rehabilitation after a life threatening fall in St Moritz in February. Baker suffered a bleed on the brain after the fall which resulted him being placed in an induced coma and which ultimately required him to learn how to walk again. Although Baker has made a brilliant recovery, recently playing both golf and tennis, a return to race-riding is a bridge too far. “I have known for some time that I probably would not race-ride again and the confirmation came a couple of weeks ago. Another bang on the head would not be good and I think I would have struggled to pass the medical,” Baker told At The Races on Friday. 35-year-old Baker rode over 1,300 winners in a career which began in 1999 with one of his riding highlights coming in the 2016 G1 St Leger at Doncaster when he steered the Laura Mongan trained Harbour Law (GB) (Lawman {Fr}) to victory. Baker hopes to remain in the racing industry in a professional capacity and mentioned developing a role as a jockey's coach as one of his future options.
