New Rising Star Aims for San Felipe

Newly-minted “TDN Rising Star” Danzing Candy (Twirling Candy) will be pointed towards Santa Anita's GII San Felipe S. Mar. 12 off an impressive allowance victory going a mile in Arcadia Thursday.

“He ran good,” said trainer Cliff Sise. “We're staying home here at Santa Anita with him. He seems to like this track. The San Felipe, would be next. He's so smooth. And, when someone comes up to him, he just takes off again.”

Off the board in his Del Mar unveiling Nov. 29, the dark bay went gate-to-wire to don cap and gown at Santa Anita Dec. 26. Breaking from the six-hole Thursday, the Halo Farms and Diane and Jim Bashor runner dueled early, gained control at the half and sailed home a dominant winner under Hall of Famer Mike Smith.

“I like him a lot,” said Smith. “Once he starts [breaking] better, then we can place him and then I think he'll really be nice. He doesn't have to be in front. I'm having to kind of use him there early and it puts him on the lead, but I don't really want to be there.”

Smith added, “The first time I won on him, I told Cliff, 'This might be the one that takes us that way.' So far, I can't say anything different [Thursday] than I did then, other than [Thursday] was even more impressive.”
