New Money Honey Staves Off Sistercharlie in Belmont Oaks

New Money Honey | Sarah Andrew

Trainer Chad Brown continued his domination in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational, saddling his fifth winner in six years courtesy of 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine New Money Honey (Medaglia d'Oro), who led home a one-two-three finish for the barn Saturday. Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), favored 8-5 following a runner-up finish in the G1 Prix de Diane June 18, rallied from last of 11 to come within a neck of the winner. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in third.

“They all ran terrific,” Brown said. “Obviously, [New Money Honey] ran terrific, got position early, and they were moving along pretty good. Javier [Castellano] just backed off a little bit and had first run. My other two horses were two first-time Euros, they broke a little slow and were pretty far back. Both of them ran terrific, they look like they're going to have outstanding careers as well. I haven't really planned beyond this race, actually they'll probably all go in different directions.”

A dull sixth in the GIII Appalachian S. Apr. 13 at Keeneland to start her 3-year-old campaign, last term's GIII Miss Grillo S. heroine got back on track with a wire-to-wire score after setting easy early fractions in the local GIII Wonder Again S. June 8.

Backed as the second choice in this first try at 1 1/4 miles, the bay tracked from fourth behind honest fractions of :23.50, :47.54 and 1:11.38. Moving to challenge three-deep at the five-sixteenths pole as Sistercharlie tried to wind up from last, New Money Honey overtook Grizzel (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) at the eighth pole and went clear before staving off the closing favorite.

“I'm very lucky to ride for Mr. Brown and the opportunity he gives me to ride the filly,” Castellano said. “We've been really lucky except for the last couple of races with the filly. I think she is very straight-forward and today she broke well out of the gate and got a good spot in the race. Chad and I talked about our strategy before the race and I tried to follow procedure. It worked out great. It was a beautiful spot in the beginning of the race. When it was time to go, she responded and finished really well today.”

Pedigree Notes:

New Money Honey is out of the unraced Weekend Whim, a full-sister to Grade I winner Any Given Saturday and a half to graded stakes winner Bohemian Lady (Carson City). The mare produced a filly by Pioneerof the Nile in 2016 and a colt by Carpe Diem in 2017. New Money Honey's multiple stakes placed half-sister Coconut Shrimp (Giant's Causeway) sold to Malibu Farm for $485,000 while in foal to Palace Malice at last year's Keeneland November Sale. The winner's second dam Weekend in Indy was purchased by WinStar's Lisa Troutt for $290,000 while carrying the foal that would become Bohemian Lady at the 2000 Keeneland November sale.
