New Approach Half To Waldgeist Wins the Malleret

The last time her half-brother Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was winning in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly, Waldlied (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) was unable to provide a family double due to no fault of her own when an unlucky second in the G3 Prix de Royaumont. On Sunday, the deadly brother-sister combination got it right with Pierre-Charles Boudot keen to exploit the filly's greatest asset which is her stride and win the G2 Prix de Malleret at Saint-Cloud with plenty in hand. Held up initially, the 6-5 favourite was soon allowed to bowl into the lead after the opening three furlongs and the contest was as good as decided there. Only Fuse (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) offered any kind of fight in the straight, but Newsells Park Stud and Gestut Ammerland's homebred was far too strong and hit the line with 2 1/2 lengths to spare over that Wertheimer representative, with the G3 Musidora S. winner Give and Take (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) six lengths away in third. “She is a classy filly with great pace and a fantastic stride,” trainer Andre Fabre said. “She has been green on occasion, but that's only because of her lack of experience. We will target the [G1 Prix] Vermeille [at ParisLongchamp Sept. 16], but for more experience she will head to the [Aug. 18 G2 Prix de la] Nonette [at Deauville] first.”

Waldlied, who opened her account over this course and distance at the start of May before being caught up in traffic when runner-up to Pollara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in Chantilly's Prix de Royaumont, was adding further lustre to the portfolio of her G3 Prix Penelope-winning dam Waldlerche (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). Waldgeist has now proven top-class at two, three and four while Waldlerche's half-brother is the G1 St Leger hero Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}). The second dam Waldmark (Ger) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}) was runner-up in the G2 Falmouth S. and is a daughter of the four-times group-scoring German champion and runaway G2 Deutsches St Leger heroine Wurftaube (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}). Her progeny include the G1 Deutsches Derby hero Waldpark (Ger) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Waldmark's full-sister Waldbeere (GB), who is in turn the dam of the six-times group-winning sire Wiesenpfad (Fr) (Waky Nao {GB}) and the G1 Preis der Diana third Waldtraut (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Waldlerche also has an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old colt by Sea the Stars {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Kingman (GB).
