Sonic Boom went from gate-to-wire to register his first graded success in the American Derby on Arlington's Stars and Stripes day. Dashing out alongside Hembree, the chalk gained the advantage rounding the first turn as Hembree floated out wide and settled to press from second through opening splits of :23.43 and :48.05. Showing the way into the lane, Sonic Boom kept on finding to score over a rallying Gorgeous Kitten.
“This was a step forward for him today,” winning trainer Ian Wilkes said. “I think with Julien [Leparoux], we figured out how to ride him, and let him do his thing.”
Runner-up in the Zuma Beach S. during his juvenile campaign, Sonic Boom kicked off this term with a fourth-place finish in Gulfstream's Kitten's Joy S. Feb. 4 and captured Tampa's Columbia S. next out Mar. 11. Fading to seventh in Keeneland's GIII Transylvania S. Apr. 7, the chestnut scored a decisive allowance victory going a mile over the Churchill Downs lawn last time May 29.
Pedigree Notes:
The winner, who is a full-brother to GSP Galientos, has a juvenile half-brother named Luck Check (Lookin at Lucky). His dam Silent Circle was bred back to Quality Road, but she aborted that foal, and she was most recently bred to Twirling Candy.
