More Than Ready's Miss Southern Miss Wins the Surfer Girl

Miss Southern Miss raced in reserve early and made use of a quick turn of foot to romp home much the best in her turf debut in the Monday co-feature in Arcadia. A first-out winner going five furlongs here June 9, she ran second in the Landaluce S. July 9 and filled out the exacta again in the GII Sorrento S. over 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 6. Last seen reporting home fifth in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. Sept. 3, she took fair support in the wagering to return to the winner's circle on the surface switch. Miss Southern Miss trailed the field around the opening bend and inched a bit closer as the leader completed a half-mile in :46.25. Produced with a sweeping, wide bid on the far turn, the filly struck the front in a flash in upper stretch and drew clear to report home well in front under minimal encouragement. Happy Mesa was second best. “According to her pedigree, she's supposed to run like this,” said winning trainer Keith Desormeaux, who added that Miss Southern Miss will likely make her next start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 4. “I tell you what, since the two year old crop came in there's never been a doubt as to who is number one in the barn. So yeah, we expected it.” The winner hails from the extended family of GISW Cotton Blossom (Broken Vow) and GSW Vicarage (Vicar). Miss Atlantic City, a two-time stakes winner, is also responsible for a yearling filly by Orb and a weanling colt by Union Rags. She was most recently bred back to Verrazano.
