Runflatout was picked up for $22,000 as a yearling at FTKOCT, but blossomed over the winter. Catalogued at Barretts March, the dark bay worked in an eighth in :10 at Fairplex and wound up going for $165,000. He was sent to trainer Carla Gaines and, though he was entered at Del Mar, didn't see afternoon action, and wound up being transferred to John Sadler's shedrow. Going postward as the 2-1 second choice to Bob Baffert trainee Tokubetsu (Congaree), Runflatout traveled ominously in second as the 6-5 chalk put up splits of :22.19 and :44.53. Jockey Garrett Gomez gave him a tap on the shoulder on the turn, and the colt drew even entering the stretch. They raced in tandem before Runflatout asserted himself stylishly, crossing the line 2 1/2 lengths clear as Gomez remained motionless in the final 100 yards. Tokubetsu remained 8 1/2 lengths clear of stablemate Midnight Interlude (War Chant). Slammin' Lil has a two-year-old Flatter colt, and was bred back to the Claiborne stallion last spring. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $32,400.
