  Santa Anita, Race 9, Msw, 54,000, 3yo, f, 5 1/2f, 1:02 4/5, ft

  Hout Bay, F, 3, by Harlan's Holiday

1st Dam: Western Rush, by West By West
2nd Dam: Kylie's Pride, by Spend a Buck
3rd Dam: Catch On Quick, by Smarten

Hout Bay trained like a horse on a mission in the weeks leading up to this career debut, breezing six furlongs in a race-like 1:11 2/5 Jan. 10 followed by a bullet half-mile in :46 4/5 Jan. 17. She was made a 6-1 chance on Jon White's morning line, but took significant support at the windows and was dispatched at odds of 7-2 at post time. Left a bit flat-footed and a few steps slow at the start, Hout Bay settled towards the back of the pack, as jockey Joel Rosario took a hold of her in an attempt to turn in a flourish at the finish. Out of the picture at the three-eighths pole, Hout Bay caught the eye nearing the quarter-mile marker. Switched out widest for the drive, she exploded with a turf-like turn of foot to roll past all of her rivals for an extremely impressive 1 1/2-length victory. Dolci Domenica (With Distinction) was second best. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $32,400.
