Winslow Homer had spent the last three months getting treated by Dr. Ian McKinlay for a foot ailment. But those problems seem a thing of the past, as the lanky grey stamped himself one to pay attention to next season. A disappointing third, beaten a half-length, in his 5 1/2-furlong debut at Delaware Park July 28, the $310,000 KEESEP yearling purchase put it all together in his next start, taking a seven-furlong maiden rained off the turf at Saratoga by three lengths Aug. 22. Pounded into 1-2 favoritism for this first two-turn voyage, Winslow Homer was a bit slow to begin, then stalked the pace from third down the backstretch. Sent along three wide into the far turn, he took command at will approaching the quarter pole and was never asked for his best, winning by a geared-down 12 1/2 lengths. The winner's dam, victorious in the 2004 GIII Tempted S., was sold at Keeneland November last week for $1.7 million carrying a full sibling to Winslow Homer. Lifetime Record: 3-2-0-1, $62,825.
