  LEOPARDSTOWN, 18.05, Mdn, 17,500, 2yo, f, 7fT, 1:27.40, gd, 7, 6

Termagant (Ire), F, 2, by Powerscourt (GB)

1st Dam: Rock Salt (GB), by Selkirk
2nd Dam: Kamkova, by Northern Dancer
3rd Dam: Populi, by Star Envoy

Termagant, a €34,000 GOFSPT yearling, was allowed off at 14-1 in this hot maiden and belied those odds with an impressive first display. Settled last of the five runners until making eye-catching headway under pressure rounding the home turn, she quickened in smart fashion to lead passing the furlong marker and required minimal encouragement from there to score by a comfortable two lengths from Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). "I wasn't surprised at all as I've always thought she was quite useful," commented trainer Kevin Prendergast. "She has a nice pedigree, there is a champion grass horse in America [Vanlandingham] on her page and she'll definitely get a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half eventually. She was originally bought for some clients, who then pulled out. We gave €34,000 for her and, despite the recession, she is worth a bit more now." Termagant becomes the first winner, from just three runners, for her freshman sire (by Sadler's Wells). Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor's Lovingonyourmind (Storm Cat), a daughter of Farda Amiga (Broad Brush), was scratched due to running a high temperature. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, €12,093.
