Necessary Evil was no secret here as the crowd's 9-5 choice and didn't disappoint her backers. Breaking alertly under Joel Rosario, the bay miss was up to set the pace and ripped through a pressured quarter in :21.97. She turned the corner while still under a hand ride and, after a half in :44.71, needed only a single left-handed reminder to keep her mind on business as she steamed home 3 3/4 lengths to the good of the rallying Mi Sueno (Pulpit) in track-record time. The latter, the first foal produced by Grade I winner Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), was a $1.7 million Keeneland November weanling and was debuting for the Southern Equine team. Necessary Evil was a $160,000 FTKJUL yearling who RNA'd for $270,000 at the Barretts March Sale. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $27,600.
