No Hubris started as the well-supported 7-2 second choice in this race won 12 months ago by subsequent G2 Mill Reef S. winner and G1 Dewhurst S. runner-up Lord Shanakill (Speightstown) and showed a professional attitude to dispute the early lead. Gaining the edge at halfway, he lengthened clear soon after and the $160,000 KEENOV weanling and 85,000gns TATOCT yearling had matters in hand as Flying Statesman (Johannesburg) closed to within 2 1/4 lengths at the line. "He's very relaxed at home and behaved very well here and good horses tend to be like that in my experience," trainer Paul Cole said. "He was very professional and I'm delighted, as he's bound to improve a bit. Although I haven't had time to think about it yet, the G2 Coventry S. [at Royal Ascot June 16] is a provisional plan and as he is slightly unfurnished he will go straight there. [The 1992 G1 Prix d'Ispahan and GI Budweiser International winner] Zoman (Affirmed) is in the pedigree and he was a lightly-gutted horse--this one reminded me of him and although he wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, I knew the family so had a bit of luck getting him." Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, £7,836. O: Mrs Fitri Hay | B: Brereton Jones | T: Paul Cole |
