Sir Michael Stoute was enjoying success in the G1 2000 Guineas at around this time in 2001 with Golan (Ire), and while his full-brother may not be as precocious, Tartan Bearer certainly has a fair share of ability. Catching the eye when staying on into second in a seven-furlong Newmarket maiden on debut in November, the blaze-faced chestnut had suffered from foot problems in the interim, according to connections, but attracted heavy support as the 2-5 favorite on this return. Racing keenly in the second rank early, the homebred made his move with a quarter mile remaining and, after being galvanized by Alan Munro, surged 2 3/4 lengths clear of stable companion Warringah (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at the line. Golan was a MGSW-Eng, GSW-Fr, G1SP-Ire, and earned $1,624,185. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, £4,035.
