Jockey Ridge, a $7,000 FTMDEC yearling, blossomed into a $110,000 FTMMAY juvenile six months later. He earned an 81 Beyer Speed Figure when finishing a distant second to Lieutenant Ron in an Aqueduct maiden Nov. 10, and had several sharp local works since arriving in Florida. Sent off as the 2-1 choice here, the bay colt came away cleanly from post eight and was soon in front, setting splits of :21.97 and :44.40 while Eibar Coa sat motionless in the saddle. He was shaken up a bit turning for home and responded nicely, opening up daylight before being geared down late to score by 4 3/4 lengths. Excess Capital (Distorted Humor) came on to nip A Diehl (Aldebaran) for second at the line. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $34,400.
