Colonel John, a half to Caroline's Gold (Touch Gold), GSP, $156,410, came up only a half-length short when second in his Aug. 19 debut at Del Mar and was bet down to 2-5 at second asking. Confidently ridden by jockey Corey Nakatani, the bay shadowed the leaders while on the inside down the backstretch. Nakatani found himself trapped behind horses as they raced around the far turn and had to check briefly, but he angled outside to take command at the eighth pole and powered away to a 4 1/2-length triumph. Usurp (Deputy Commander) was second best. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $39,400.
