Diamond Tycoon showed definite promise when a late-closing second in a Newmarket mile maiden on debut in October, but was ignored by the punters here and drifted to 8-1. Making a mockery of those odds, the $55,000 KEENOV weanling and 35,000gns TATAPR juvenile travelled sweetly for Jamie Spencer in front from the outset, who was still motionless as the remainder were struggling at the quarter pole. Pushed out soon after, he required only hand riding to inflict an impressive six-length defeat on Lucarno (Dynaformer). "Everything’s been running as if it needs a run and getting a little tired, so confidence wasn’t as high as it usually can be," trainer Brian Meehan said. "We did expect him to win though, as we’ve always thought a lot of him and Jamie [Spencer] was very impressed. By the time we got him back into gentle work in December after a break, we thought he could well be a Guineas horse and he goes straight to the [May 5] G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket now." Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, £8,018. O: Racegoers Club Owners Group | B: W S Farish, Mansell Stables LLC & Edmund Odette | T: Brian Meehan |
