Great Point, a $355,000 KEENOV weanling and $450,000 KEESEP yearling, was produced by a half sister to multi-millionaire Spain (Thunder Gulch). The Robert LaPenta colorbearer had been training forwardly at Belmont and was sent off at 5-2 for his career opener. After breaking alertly, the chestnut was a half-length back in second through an opening quarter of :22 4/5, but assumed command on the turn and galloped home 8 3/4 lengths clear. Great Point marks the second winner for his freshman sire, 2001 Horse of the Year Point Given (by Thunder Gulch). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $25,800. O: Robert V LaPenta | B: Craig & Cathy Beam (KY) | T: Nicholas P Zito |
