Fifth Avenue began the race as the first runner for 2001 GI Kentucky Derby hero Monarchos (by Maria’s Mon) and, just under a minute later, became his first winner. The $90,000 OBSAUG yearling showed plenty of gas early, dueling to the inside of Folklore (Tiznow) through a quick quarter in :21 3/5. Fifth Avenue began to edge away in upper stretch and finished 3 1/2 lengths clear of that rival at the wire at odds of 5-2. Odds-on Ready to Please (More than Ready) finished a tired fourth. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $25,800.
