On paper, Smuggler looked to have the race in the bag heading into this event, but after the opening sixteenth, a victory looked highly unlikely. Out of touch with the field early, the bay raced wide throughout and began to pick off horses heading for home. With over a half dozen lengths left to be made up in the final eighth, the filly turned on all boosters late and swept to the front in the final strides to record an impressive one-length score over Call the Thunder (Thunder Gulch) as the 6-5 chalk. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $27,000.
