Maybe it's because I grew up nearby that he battle of Gettysburg has loomed so large in my imagination no more so than today on the 149th anniversary of Picketts Charge and the "high tide" of the Confederacy and to thoughts of the thousands of horses, many thoroughbreds among them who fought and died there. I direct anyone touched by the plight of the horse in war to go to the site of the Paul Mellon financed Civil War Horse Memorial at Ft. Riley, Kansas "dedicated to the 1 and 1/2 million horses and mules who were killed, wounded or died of disease" during the Civil war.

I'm wondering if anyone remembers a news item from a few years back that identified the area of the Gettysburg battle field that was a mass grave for the wounded and injured horses and mules of the battle? In the immediate aftermath of the battle one of the tasks that befell the "victors" was the euthanization of the many(thousands?) of animals caught up in that carnage. I'm also wondering whether on next years anniversary, the 150th and sure to be a major event, there will be any recognition of the role that horses and mules played in the Civil

War?
