Hello Barb:

Its me, Bullwinkle.

Exchange wagering actually would take bettors and monies out of the current betting pool and channel funds through Betfair and Stronach's group. Tracks would receive a smaller percentage of the monies wagered from these organizations than they currently receive through the existing wagering system. The argument that thousands of new horse racing bettors are going to come out of the woodwork seems unrealistic. Convenience will not cause the people who don't normally bet on racing to say "Wow, now we can bet on horse races without going to the track or betting parlor."

Does anyone really believe the exchange wagering groups are altruistic, and that they are not just trying to get a bigger share of what remains of racing for themselves?

Page 1623 of the latest BloodHorse Magazine has a story on the exchange wagering plan being proposed in California. It would enable bettors to bet FOR and AGAINST horses in races. The Stronach Group is proposing it and is pitching that CA would realize millions of dollars of additional revenue with the new betting arrangement. Stronach wants to include TVG and HRTV in the plan. Comments?
