Looking Back; It was the Best Horse that Day

"Four of the last seven Belmont Stakes have been won by jockeys who have ridden the race for the first time, including Jeremy Rose (Afleet Alex in 2005), Fernando Jara (Jazil 2006), Alan Garcia (Da’ Tara in 2008), and Jose Valdivia (Ruler On Ice in 2011). Neither Rose nor Valdivia was a regular on this circuit." Source:DRF

Rose was 25

Jara was 19

Garcia was 23

Gutierrez is 24 or 25.

Valdivia was an older rider at 36, but it was still his first Belmont Stakes. It was also probably his first 12f race; there are not many in NA.

I'll Have Another--another great horse and fine young jockey that won't win the Triple Crown!--look back at the last few tries-- inexperienced jockeys just don't know how to rate a horse for the extra 1/4 mile of the Belmont.
