you're never going to see an end to the use of Lasix. Didn't you read a few TDNs ago Dale Romans saying Lasix was around long before, as he put it, "it appear in the program". So even if it is banned on race day it will continue in widespread use for training

I have mixed feelings about the two NY Times articles. Yes, by oppose drugs in racing and oppose racing a claimer that's lame. But the NYT articles use anecdotal evidence that refers to the most flagrant cases; it seems a bit dishonest. If I wanted to do an exposé on cheating in the stock market and Madoff was my main example, I would lose credibility. Meanwhile, in professional sports, hockey enforcers "break down" by committing suicide, football players break down and die in their forties, baseball players on steroids break records, and yet the fans keep pouring into stadiums and betting on games. People who do not follow pro sports hear good things and bad things about pro sports. People who do not follow horse racing hear mainly bad things about racing. That said, claiming horses are the working class of racing, and they deserve to be defended against any and all abuse.

Absolutely, the claimers are the unsung heroes, the foundation of racing and yet it is often the case of 'let's get one more race out of him' and tragedy strikes.
