wasn't a breakdown...horse simply tripped...all horses and jockeys are fine

we're talking about the use of the whip not whether apparently horses and riders are not dead at Monmouth by some stroke of luck.

whipping doesn't cause injuries, racing causes injuries. Eddie Arcaro, who could certainly ride a race horse, responded to the criticism that he whipped the great Nashua too much by saying he couldn't be ridden without the whip, he'd prop and do all sorts of antics if his mind wasn't kept to the task at hand. The breakdown at Monmouth in the feature on opening day wasn't in the final 1/16 and wasn't due to whipping.

Because one horse like Nashua responded to the whip doesn't mean all horses no. Creative Cause certainly doesn't. And one has to wonder why a great horse like Nashua couldn't run without being beaten with the whip. Sounds like he didn't enjoy running. I guess not all horses are as talented and passionate about running as Secretariat. Turcotte certainly wasn't whipping Big Red when he was 31 lengths in front.

I think it would be wise considering the trend racing is taking to raise the scales a bit for the jockeys and also limit the amout of times that they can hit a horse down the stretch. Any Comments??
