Medaglia d'Oro Stablemate Runs Down Newspaperofrecord in Wonder Again

Cambier Parc | Sarah Andrew

Cambier Parc, a well-beaten fourth over good going in the GIII Edgewood S. on the GI Kentucky Oaks undercard, powered past her highly regarded stablemate Newspaperofrecord in deep stretch to pull off the upset.

Last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine was an overwhelming 1-9 favorite looking to bounce back from a first defeat when second in the Edgewood, but it was more or less a repeat of that outing, with the heavy chalk completely controlling things up front before getting run down late.

Cambier Parc was always traveling nicely while saving ground in the compact field in third as Newspaperofrecord led through fractions of :23.96 and :48.58. Locked and loaded on the far turn, the Oxo Equine colorbearer was tipped out for the stretch run and kicked home nicely to get the money.

“I'm not surprised Cambier Parc ran this well,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “That's why we had her in the race. She's a much better horse on firm ground. That race at Churchill didn't do her any justice. She has the bloodlines to do it. Her mother was second in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. As you saw today, she's an up-and-comer in this division.”

Fourth as the even-money favorite after getting steadied at the start in her debut sprinting over a muddy Aqueduct main track Nov. 3, the bay switched to grass in style with a runaway maiden win over the Gulfstream lawn Jan. 2 and posted her first stakes victory with a decision in the GIII Herecomesthebride S. Mar. 2.

As far Newspaperofrecord, Brown added, “Newspaperofrecord was disappointing. She couldn't stay a mile and an eighth today. I didn't see any excuse for the trip she got, or the fractions. The only thing I would say about her is what I'd like to see next time against a bigger field if we go on to the Belmont Oaks. I would like to see her have someone to follow deeper into the stretch.”

Pedigree Notes:

Cambier Parc, bred on the same cross responsible for dual-surface GISW Mshawish, was the most expensive of 44 yearlings sold by her sire in 2017 when bringing $1.25 million from Larry Best's OXO Equine at the Keeneland September Sale. The winner's dam, a three-time Canadian champion, was bought by Bonne Chance Farm for $750,000 at Keeneland November in 2015 with Cambier Parc in utero. Sealy Hill, who also has produced Hillaby (Distorted Humor), Ch. Female Sprinter-Can & GSW, $282,265; Belle Hill (Sky Mesa), GSW, $180,725; and Gale Force (Giant's Causeway), GSW, $138,611, has another Medaglia d'Oro filly who went for $425,000 to Whisper Hill Farm at KEESEP in the fall, and she produced a colt by Into Mischief last spring. She was barren on a Distorted Humor cover for the 2019 season.
