Medaglia d'Oro Colt Wins the Bob in KY Jockey Club

When last seen, Godolphin's Enticed (Medaglia d'Oro) was an excellent third while facing winners for the first time in the GI Champagne S. at Belmont Park Oct. 7. The runner-up in that event, Good Magic (Curlin), came back with a comprehensive defeat of then divisional leader Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar Nov. 4 and the form of those two races was further franked Saturday when Enticed outgamed Tiz Mischief (Into Mischief) in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Downs. Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford), whose sire broke his maiden at 25-1 on the 'Stars of Tomorrow' program in 2010 before going on to Classic glory the following spring, set the pace and held well for third.

The scopey homebred was ridden away from gate six by Junior Alvarado and got into a prominent spot early on, then was just able to avoid an incident to his inside entering the first turn. The rail-drawn Street Sense S. winner Gotta Go (Shanghai Bobby) drifted out, causing a chain reaction that saw Diamond King (Quality Road) drop Frankie Pennington and also caused Givemeaminit (Star Guitar) to bump soundly with Enticed to his outside. Enticed continued to race handy enough to the pace down the backside while in some traffic, but was always traveling nicely and was just in behind the speed as the field approached the exit to the final turn. Spun wide into the lane, Enticed rolled up to tackle Promises Fulfilled nearing the eighth pole, but Tiz Mischief had weaved his way into contention and split those two to make it a line of three. The pacesetter yielded grudgingly and Enticed managed to do slightly the better over the last little bit to take it by a short head.

“My horse had quite the learning experience. He's still a baby so there is a lot of room to grow still,” Alvarado said. “He's a big colt. It was a little rough coming into the first turn with a lot of horses in front of him, but he handled it well. Turning for home, he shied a little bit when a horse came out but dug in. He got a little lost once he got in front, but he dug in and finished well. I thought I had it at the wire, but it was very close.”

Pedigree Notes:

Enticed is the first foal to make the races for his dam, winner of the 2011 GI Acorn S. and GI CCA Oaks and second to Royal Delta (Empire Maker) in that year's GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. Enticed's second dam was acquired by Sheikh Mohammed's operation with their purchase of the vast majority of the racing and breeding stock of Stonerside Farm, for whom Catboat scored her most important victory in the 2004 GIII Arlington Breeders' Cup Oaks. It's Tricky is the dam of a yearling filly by Ghostzapper. Enticed is the 108th black-type winner and 57th graded winner for Medaglia d'Oro.
