Malibu Moon's Farrell Simply Too Good in FG Oaks

Farrell | Lou Hodges

No fewer than five sophomore fillies since 2005 have used the GII Fair Grounds Oaks as a springboard to success in the GI Kentucky Oaks about a month down the road. Coffeepot Stable's Farrell will have every chance to add to that total, as she romped clear in the final sixteenth of a mile to stamp her authority on Saturday's race.

Made the 2-5 chalk to record a fourth consecutive stakes success, Farrell landed in a perfect stalking position from third, three wide and in the clear, as Daria's Angel (Gemologist) set a sound, if not breakneck, pace in advance of California raider Vexatious. A second flight of three rivals set up just behind the leading trio. While Daria's Angel was still enjoying a fairly easy time of it on the lead, Farrell began warming up to the task while scarcely being asked by Channing Hill and the battle was joined at the head of the lane. She dueled briefly with Vexatious to about the eighth pole, but always had that one's measure and pulled well clear to score as much the best. Wicked Lick made ground up the fence to just touch Vexatious out of second money.

A maiden winner at second asking at Churchill last October, the well-related Farrell cleared off to win that track's GII Golden Rod S. by a half-dozen lengths at the tail end of October. In a pair of starts this term, she proved far too classy for short fields in a muddy renewal of the Silverbulletday S. Jan. 21 and over a dry strip in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. Feb. 25.

Pedigree Notes:
Farrell is the first graded-stakes winning female for his dam, whose distinguished previous produce from a variety of sire lines include Grade I winners J. B.'s Thunder (Harlan's Holiday) and 'TDN Rising Star' Carpe Diem (Giant's Causeway). The SW & GSP Rebridled Dreams's first black-type winner was Doncaster Rover (War Chant), a treble listed winner and four times placed at Group 3 level in England. Semper Fortis (Distorted Humor) was runner-up in the 2016 GII Los Alamitos Derby. Rebridled Dreams is the dam of a colt by Speightstown, a $675,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September sale and currently in training at Crupi's New Castle Farm. She produced a full-sister to Carpe Diem in 2016.
