Lucky Folie began her career with a win over the Del Mar main track, besting next-out winner Bellamentary (Bellamy Road) by 2 1/4 lengths Sept. 6. The Wertheimer and Frere homebred led throughout Santa Anita's one-mile Surfer Girl S. while trying the turf Oct. 10, but drifted in during the final furlong and was disqualified and placed second behind Stays in Vegas (City Zip). The 2-1 second choice to earn her first black-type win, broke on top and clicked off uncontested splits of :22.4 and :44.99. Favored Pretty N Cool (Scat Daddy) made a run at the top of the lane, but lucky Folie kept grinding to maintain a narrow advantage and, as Treasuring bid from up the rail, Lucky Folie found more in the tank to win by a neck. Lucky Folie is the third foal out of the MSP dam Lucky Copy.
“I didn't think she'd be that quick [early] coming out of a mile race,” said winning trainer Richard Mandella. “She's so quiet I didn't think she'd be that aggressive but she sure was. And it turned out pretty good.”
