Lucarno Succumbs to Heart Attack

Lucarno | Racing Post

Lucarno (Dynaformer–Vignette, by Diesis {GB}), winner of the G1 St Leger S. in 2007, passed away after a heart attack at Longford House Stud in Ireland on Tuesday, Racing Post reported. He was 14.

Trained by John Gosden for breeder George Strawbridge's Augustin Stable, the bay took the Listed Fairway S. at Newmarket in his third start and was fourth in Authorized (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire})'s Blue Riband at Epsom that June. Second in the G2 King Edward VII S. at Ascot later that month Lucarno matured into a formidable stayer during the second half of his 3-year-old season. Two starts after the King Edward, the G2 Great Voltigeur S. went his way in August of 2007, and he signed off in the St Leger, sealing English highweight 3-year-old honours over 14 furlongs or greater. Lucarno saluted in the G2 Princess of Wales's S. in five starts at four, retiring with five wins in 14 starts and earnings of $1,146,233.

Originally standing three seasons at Wood Farm Stud in England followed by two at Haras de Saint Voir in France, Lucarno is a full-brother to English highweight and GSW Flying Officer and G2 Great Voltigeur S. victor Thought Worthy. Moved from Shade Oak Stud in England to Longford House Stud for 2018, his oldest foals are 8-year-olds and are beginning succeed over jumps.

“Lucarno was a lovely, kind stallion with a big future ahead of him and is a big loss to us,” June Lewis of Longford House Stud told Racing Post.
