Lope de Vega's Soustraction Beats the Rising Stars In the d'Aumale

Beaten three lengths by TDN Rising Star Efaadah over 7 1/2 furlongs on debut at Deauville Aug. 8, Soustraction rewarded trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias's guile in pitching her back in against that rival by readily reversing the form. Settled third early by Maxime Guyon, the chestnut snuck up the fence to gain the lead with 300 metres to race as Efaadah and fellow TDN Rising Star Wild Illusion got going from behind. Pressed all the way to the line by that duo, the homebred was too strong for either on a day when closers had tough assignments around this circuit.
This race is significant in its own right, but also serves as a vital trial for the Oct. 1 G1 Prix Marcel Boussac over the same course and distance. “I have to say I was very disappointed not to see her win first time out, but in a race for newcomers you never know and you can run into a very fit horse,” Laffon-Parias commented. “I did not hesitate to run her here, as I knew she had improved and I knew she stays very well and this course would suit her better than Deauville. This is the first time I have won a group race with a maiden and she has earned a place in the Marcel Boussac.” Efaadah's trainer Freddie Head could not hide his dismay at the result. “I am disappointed, certainly, but I think it was a combination of the ground being unsuitable for a Dansili and not having the best of trips,” he said. “I have no plans for her at this stage.”
Soustraction's dam Mathematicienne is a full-sister to the Listed La Coupe des Trois Ans winner Galipad (Ire), with their respective dam Never Green having taken the Listed Prix Occitanie. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix Cleopatre winner and outstanding producer Brooklyn's Dance, whose six black-type winners are headed by the surprise G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Solemnia (Ire) (Poliglote {GB}). She is also responsible for the dual pattern-race scorer and G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Prospect Park (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and his G2 Prix Greffulhe-winning full-brother Prospect Wells (Fr) who was also runner-up in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Poliglote and Galileo share Sadler's Wells as a sire and Never Green's Listed Prix de la Pepiniere-winning half-sister Gold Dodger (Slew O'Gold) is the second dam of another son of Galileo in last year's G1 Sussex S. and G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero The Gurkha (Ire). Mathematicienne's yearling filly is by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) and is named Mathematica (Ger).
