Lope de Vega Filly Wins the Natalma

Capla Temptress, shipped in from England by Team Valor International, finished strongest of all to capture Sunday's GI Natalma S., punching her “Win and You're In” ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November at Del Mar. It was the filly's first North American appearance after recently placing third in the G3 Sweet Solera S. at Newmarket.

“I bought her with this plan in mind,” noted owner Barry Irwin from Team Valor.

The bay captured her June 21 debut at Chelmsford and made it two-in-a-row with a victory in an allowance race at Newmarket July 22, after which Team Valor acquired the filly privately before entering her in the Sweet Solera.

A bit overlooked in the wagering here, she raced well back in the early stages behind fractions of :23.69 and :47.58. Capla Temptress was patiently handled on the turn as pace-setting Dixie Moon (Curlin) made a run for it, but she quickly asserted herself once straightened out for the drive, split horses decisively in midstretch and uncorked a strong rally to win going away. Dixie Moon held on for second in a photo finish.

“She's a fighter,” Irwin said. “She's small, but she's got a long stride and she's all heart.”

Winning rider Joel Rosario added, “I was trying to let her be behind somebody all the time. She was very nice. I had to tap her a little bit on the backside to get her attention. After that, she did the job.”

Pedigree Notes:

A $29,263 Goffs Orby yearling, Capla Temptress is the last documented foal from her dam, who is a half-sister to MGSW and GI Arlington Million third-place finisher Stotsfold (GB) (Barathea {Ire}).
