Lombo Becomes First Stakes Winner for Graydar in Bob Lewis

Lombo | Benoit

Lombo (Graydar), a sharp maiden winner going 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita Jan. 20, returned on short notice to run this field off their feet.

Let go at 8-1 in this first attempt around two turns, the $75,000 OBSMAR purchase sped out to take early control, clocking an opening quarter in :23.40 and a half-mile in :47.26. Kicking clear of his pursuers entering the far turn, the gray was never seriously threatened in the stretch en route to a facile score.

“He's definitely a high-octane horse,” winning trainer Mike Pender said. “He's just a big kid and got a little ADD to him, but he's starting to figure it out. When he does really figure it out, I think he'll be really dangerous. We've been training since November to get two turns. I knew he was going to break right on the muscle today and take them as far as he could.”

Seventh on debut in a Del Mar turf sprint Nov. 10, Lombo flashed smart speed and reported home a well-beaten third behind the very impressive Ax Man (Misremembered) in a restricted maiden special weight sprinting over this strip Jan. 1. He earned his diploma 19 days later by 3 1/2 lengths.

“Santa Anita's home, we're going to do what's in this horse's best interest, run him out of his stall for Mr. Stronach and the Santa Anita fans is something I always plan on first and foremost,” Pender concluded.

Pedigree Notes:

Lombo is the first black-type winner from the first crop of Graydar (Unbridled's Song). The stakes-winning Burg Berg had a colt by Graydar in 2016 and a colt by Constitution in 2017. She was bred back to Street Boss. Burg Berg went through the ring twice, bringing $200,000 from Twin Creeks Farm at the 2012 KEENOV sale and $95,000 from Cove Springs at the 2016 KEENOV sale. Lombo's second dam Snowberg was a stakes winner at Del Mar and hit the board in a trio of Grade I events.
